Features

Cabot Clear Solution® is specially formulated with a unique blend of resin and oil to provide a superior natural finish for bare wood. This distinctive product comes in five natural tones that not only sustains the natural beauty of exterior wood, it also provides excellent wood penetrating protection against the sun and all damaging weather elements. It's water-repellent, to keep moisture out and guard against warping and checking, plus it's mildew resistant. Easy to apply requiring just one coat, Cabot Clear Solution slightly darkens wood when first applied leaving a flat and translucent finish. The finish then slowly weathers with time to a natural wood hue depending upon the color of product chosen and the particular wood type on which it was applied.

Coverage

On smooth surfaces, approximately 400-500 square feet per gallon; on rough surfaces, 150-250 square feet per gallon. These rates will vary depending upon the porosity of the surface.

Where to Use

Cabot Clear Solution is for use on new or reconditioned wood only, including decks, siding, roofs, shingles, shakes, trim and on log homes. Cabot Clear Solution can be applied to all natural wood species such as cedar, fir, pine, cypress, spruce, redwood and plywood, including Texture 1-11, and will produce outstanding results on all premium grade lumber. It can also be applied to pressure-treated wood.

Preparing Your Surfaces

Proper surface preparation is the key to maximum performance. The durability of this product can be impaired by an unsound or poorly prepared surface. It is very important that the surface be clean of all dirt, mildew stains, loose wood fibers and other foreign matter. In order to be effective, a stain must be able to penetrate. Surfaces must be structurally sound and absolutely dry. (Moisture content must be below 15%, or wood must be exposed to dry weather a minimum of 3 to 5 days.) Weathered wood surfaces must be sanded or scrubbed to bare wood with a detergent solution or Cabot Problem-Solver® Wood Cleaner and a stiff bristle brush, or power washed to remove the surface layer of all loose wood fibers, dirt, mildew stains, chalky residue and other foreign matter. Use Cabot Problem-Solver Wood Stripper to help remove oil-based finishes from wood surfaces such as cedar, redwood, pine, cypress, fir and pressure-treated wood. Use Cabot Problem-Solver Wood Brightener to easily remove nail and metal rust stains, and renew the wood's appearance. New smooth wood that is unseasoned or appears shiny should be allowed to weather sufficiently before staining, but generally no longer than three months.

Application

Apply evenly with a brush or spray. Best results can be obtained by using a high-quality, natural bristle brush. If you must spray, always backbrush immediately after each section is coated to ensure proper penetration. On decks, and other horizontal surfaces, the application method must be by natural bristle brush. It is very important to apply only one coat.

Cleanup and Disposal

Clean brushes and equipment with mineral spirits. Dispose of empty cans or unused portion in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. Close container when not in use. Soak oily rags, lambswool, steel wool, cloths or any other material in water after use to avoid spontaneous combustion. Danger: Rags, steel wood or waste soaked with this product may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. Immediately after each use, place rags, steel wool or waste in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
